Call for Lenten Prayers for Ukraine: During the past week, Hamish Galloway – Moderator of the General Assembly – met with the leaders of the New Zealand Methodist, Roman Catholic, and Anglican churches in releasing a press statement on the terrible crisis in Ukraine.

The statement is as follows:

Across the globe people are horrified by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.  In a region that learnt the devastating lessons of war last century, the pattern has the tragic possibility of repeating. It flies in the face of much of the progress in peaceful coexistence that Europe has made in recent decades.

Once again, on European soil, we see the rights and wellbeing of millions of ordinary people trampled on by an aggressive and entitled leader. It also flies in the face of the Jesus-values of peace-making. In this instance, those values call us to stand against violence and stand with the oppressed.

Those values call for de-escalation and peace talks.  They call for humility and kindness.  As Christians we stand in solidarity with the vast chorus of voices calling for the aggression to end and the peaceful solutions to begin.

In this troubled time, this is a great example of Christian solidarity.

The Parish Council met on February 17 and amongst other matters considered the following:

  1. Lyndsey McKay spoke and responded to questions and comments about the way we provide pastoral care to parishioners.
  2. We are going to provide a collection bin for the disposal of used batteries.
  3. The Council agreed to review the 2018 Parish Mission Plan in preparation for a request we will make to Presbytery after Easter to appoint another Ministry Settlement Board. Before we do that, we will need to present the revised plan to you as a congregation for your response and sign off.
  4. Council reviewed the protocol document sent to the users of the church buildings under red settings.
  5. The Council will consider whether or not Parish Councillors should hold their position as a time limited appointment.
  6. Parish Council agreed that regular Sunday services will continue at St Martins. Since we use Vaccine Passes we believe that church is a safe place as long as we maintain the other protocols of wearing masks that fit snugly on our faces and cover our mouth and nose without falling down all the time! We need to maintain social distancing and use the Covid Tracer app or manual sign in which is mandatory.
  7. Council wants to remind everyone that if you’re feeling unwell or you feel as if it’s not ‘safe’ to attend Sunday service…please stay at home and come to church via Zoom. We broadcast every Sunday.
  8. And of course, if you are feeling unwell and showing the signs of Covid 19 please get tested to see if you are Covid positive or not.
  9. If you have any concerns about these matters or any other matters regarding parish life, please talk with one of the parish councillors or Don.
  10. The next Council meeting is on Thursday April 21 which is straight after Easter.
