Sunday 9th July 2017 10am – Let us end Word Famine

WHILE OUR CHURCH BUILDING IS REPAIRED WE ARE MEETING EACH SUNDAY AT THE MINERAL & LAPIDARY CLUB 11O WALTHAM RD (NEXT TO WALTHAM SCHOOL) AT 10AM.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WELCOME YOU.

Sunday 9 July 2017

Let us end world famine

Lord’s Prayer: God, lover of us all, most holy one,

help us to respond to you to create what you want for us here

on earth.

Give us today enough for our needs

Forgive our weak and deliberate offences

Just as we must forgive others when they hurt us.

Help us to resist evil and to do what is good

For we are yours endowed with your power to make our world whole. Amen.

The 10 Commandments of Food and reflection

  1. Give thanks for the food you eat.
  2. Eat food grown as close as possible to where you live.
  3. Strive for all people to know about and have access to affordable, nutritious food.
  4. Eat mindfully and in moderation. Do not waste food.
  5. Rejoice and share the sacred gift of food with all.
  6. Be grateful to those who grow and prepare food for your table.
  7. Support fair wages for farmworkers, farmers and food workers.
  8. Reduce the environmental damage of land, water and air from food production and the food system.
  9. Protect the biodiversity of seeds, soils, ecosystems and the cultures of food producers.
  10. Support Christian World Service – our church’s own agency and part of a world-wide network – regularly.

Reflection  – What can we do to help the issue of famine in the World

Causes: armed conflict…civil war the greatest reason                                                                 (Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Nigeria, South Asia…)

compounded by draught …failed harvests, dependency on 1 or 2 crops only…

and failures to develop agriculture & education in rural areas

extremes of wealth & poverty…lack of just tax system, or adequate regulation of banks,  so that money & security continues to ‘flood up’ (not ‘trickle down’)

OUR Response:

“Collective global efforts now imperative – we need $4.4bn by July”.

with sustained, unpolitical humanitarian access …”

~ How we use not waste food…                                                                                                     ~ buy locally, or NZ or Fair Trade – avoid monopolies –                                                                  ~ support peace-making / anti-armaments organizations –                                                            ICRC, UN Peace-Keeping, Anti-Nuclear NZ, Amnesty                                                          ~ for emergency rescue, food, shelter:  CWS (and ACT), SCF, UNFAO. UNICEF

~ Intercession: concern/intention /action                                                                                        – “smallest action here can affect across vast distances”

Digital Piano We have received a wonderful gift of a new digital piano from one of our members Ken Austin.  Ken has donated this piano in memory of his mother Joyce, who was a long time member and Elder of both St David’s and St Martins congregations.  She loved music, and we trust this piano will enhance our worship and encourage others to join our valuable musicians team.  While the digital piano plays like a ‘normal’ piano it also has a limited number of other settings like a pipe organ.  Because it is digital we can also enhance the sound level and play it through the sound system.

Thank you Ken!

Help….we need a simple dust cover made for the new digital piano.  See Dugald for instructions.

We have a new sign at the office to let people know when we are in residence.  Office hours are Wednesday- Friday mornings.

To reflect on….

What is the one thought or idea from today’s address that caught your attention, challenged, disturbed, encouraged, or helped you?

What can we learn from Team NZ and their message that we kept testing to keep learning?

How do you see God?  Is God the judge who wants you to be perfect or is God more interested in your growth and in leading you to discover life in all its fullness?

How do you think your life is a blessing to others?  If you can tell someone else why you think their life is a blessing?…..

Meditate… after a few minutes silence complete this sentence as your prayer: “Living God, it’s not too late for you and I to have a go at…………

Pentecost 3

Call to Worship:

There’s a call to follow…

We are here because in some way we have responded to that call

There’s a call to worship

We are here to respond to that call as well

There’s a call to live lives after the model of Jesus

We are here to honour that

There’s a call to examine ourselves in the light of what we read about Jesus

We do that in company with fellow travellers, companions on the way

There’s a call to examine all calls that are made on our resources: the calls of advertisers, of economists, of pollsters, of hucksters and illusionists, the delusioned and the passionately wrong, the self-centred and the greedily inflamed

We do that using the gifts of discernment present in the gathered community of Jesus

There’s a call to be wise

There’s a call to be loving

There’s a call to be open

There’s a call to minister grace

We respond to that call: together in heart, in mind, and in voice.

Benediction:

As we walk out into the day that remains to us

May what we need to remember stay close

As we wake tomorrow to a new week

May the deep purposes of our hearts carry us faithfully

As we live, and breathe, and have our being

May we be confident in your grace,

assured of your love and empowered by hope.

In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

 Sunday 18th June 2017 Pentecost 2

 Call to Worship:

This is our desire: to follow you

This is our choice: to walk along the way of Jesus

This is how we define ourselves on this day: disciples of Christ

This is who we are: Christians

Gathering together as believers with our faults,

Our failings, our doubts and fears,

Our triumphs and tragedies, our quiet joys and our exultant moments.

Some public…some private…

Some obvious to everyone but ourselves

Some known only to our deepest trusted friends.

As we are, we come: declaring by our presence

Commitment to the journey, openness to the possibility of change

Willingness to be challenged to accept healing

A desire to follow the way of Jesus, wherever it may lead

And so we worship.

May the words that have touched our hearts enliven our hearts

May the liveliness of our hearts enable our hands

May the acts of our hands so transfigure our lives

That Jesus is seen by the power of the Holy Spirit

All graced in the love of God our Father. Amen.
