WELCOME AND NOTICES

GATHERING: (Based on the psalm for the day Psalm 133)
God, how important it is for us and how pleasing it must be to you
when your people learn how to live and work together in unity.
It is in the measure that we do this that we begin to resemble you,
and to carry out most effectively your purposes in our disjointed
and discordant world.
Come, let us together praise God’s name,
rejoice in God’s loving concern for us,
declare his worth to all creatures,
and walk in harmony with God’s plan.
It is the same God who made heaven and earth
and all of us who dwell here.
Let us worship and serve God together. (adapted from Leslie Brandt)

HYMN: We Praise You, O God (Tune: Kremser WOV 25)
We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator;
In grateful devotion our tribute we bring.
We lay it before you, we kneel and adore you;
We bless your holy name, glad praises we sing.

We worship you, God of our mothers and fathers,
through trial and tempest, companion and guide.
When perils o’er-take us, you will not forsake us,
but faithful to your promise, you walk by our side.

With voices united our praises we offer
and gladly our songs of thanksgiving we raise.
Our sins now confessing, we pray for your blessing,
to you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise! C/A

OPENING PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Gillian Cree

CHILDREN’S SONG
Thank you for giving me the morning,
thank you for every day that’s new,
thank you for new things in store for me
and for work to do.

Thank you for all my friends and family,
thank you for everyone that lives,
thank you that even greatest enemies
I can forgive.

Thank you for many little sorrows,
thank you for every kindly word,
thank you that in the midst of trouble
sympathy is stirred.

Thank you, I see your word has meaning,
thank you, I know your Spirit here,
thank you, because you love all people,
those both far and near.

Thank you, O Lord, for speaking to us,
thank you for telling us you care,
thank you, O Lord, you came among us
bread and wine to share. © Bosworth & Co Ltd (WOV)

INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS

READINGS: Genesis 45:1–15 Martin Cleland
Romans 11: 1-2a, 29-32 (The Message) Gwendoline Cleland

SERMON

A TIME OF QUIET

HYMN: For the Healing of the Nations (Tune:Westminster Abbey
For the healing of the nations, WOV 343ii)
God, we pray with one accord;
for a just and equal sharing
of the things that earth affords.
To a life of love in action
help us rise and pledge our word.

Lead us forward into freedom,
from despair your world release;
that, redeemed from war and hatred
all may come and go in peace.
Show us how through care and goodness
fear will die and hope increase.

All that kills abundant living,
let it from the earth be banned:
pride of status, race or schooling,
dogmas that obscure your plan.
In our common quest for justice
may we hallow life’s brief span.

You, Creator God, have written
your great name on humankind,
for our growing in your likeness
bring the life of Christ to mind;
that, by our response and service,
earth its destiny may find. © Fred Kaan (VU)

THE OFFERING
Generous God, you call us to many forms of response in your world,
and so, we give of ourselves in whatever way is possible: through our talents, money, spiritual gifts, compassion, and vision for love’s reign, anew in the world.
We ask that you take these simple gifts,
stitched together with great hope, and patch them together into offerings of love for the world. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: We Sing a Love (Tune: Woodlands WOV 109)
We sing a love that sets all people free,
that blows like wind, that burns like scorching flame,
enfolds like earth, springs up like water clear:
come, living love, live in our hearts today.

We sing a love that seeks another’s good,
that longs to serve and not to count the cost,
a love that, yielding, finds itself made new:
come, caring love, live in our hearts today.

We sing a love, unflinching, unafraid
to be itself, despite another’s wrath,
a love that stands alone and undismayed:
come, strengthening love, live in our hearts today.

We sing a love, that, wandering, will not rest
until it finds its way, its home, its source,
through joy and sadness pressing on refreshed:
come, pilgrim love, live in our hearts today.

We sing a burning, fiery, Holy Ghost
that seeks out shades of ancient bitterness,
transfiguring these, as Christ in every heart:
come joyful love, live in our hearts today. © Stainer & Bell (CH4)

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP: (adapted from Seasons of the Spirit)
Voice 1: Some call you God Voice 2: some call you Lord
Voice 3: some call you Father. From many directions we greet you, O God of many names.

1: Some call you prophet 2: some call you liberator 3: some call you healer. From many directions, we greet you, O God of many names.

1: Some call you faithful
2: some call you disturbing
3: some call you compassionate.
From many directions, we greet you, O God of many names.

1, 2 & 3: No matter what we call you, no matter where we meet you along life’s journey, we know our God of many names beckons us,
and calls us by name.
Let us worship together, each part of this community; accompanied by a love too deep for words.

HYMN: God, Whose Love is Reigning (Tune: Praise My Soul WOV 68)
God, whose love is reigning o’er us, source of all, the ending true;
hear the universal chorus raised in joyful praise to you:
alleluia, alleluia, worship ancient, worship new.

Word of God from nature bringing springtime green and autumn gold;
mountain streams like children singing, ocean waves like thunder bold:
alleluia, alleluia, as creation’s tale is told.

Holy God of ancient glory, choosing man and woman too;
Abram’s faith and Sarah’s story formed a people bound to you.
Alleluia, alleluia, to your cove-nant keep us true.

Cove-nant, new again in Jesus, Star-child born to set us free;
sent to heal us, sent to teach us how love’s children we might be.
Alleluia, alleluia, risen Christ, our Saviour he!

Lift we then our human voices in the songs that faith would bring;
live we then in human choices lives that, like our music, sing:
alleluia, alleluia, joined in love our praises ring! © W.B. Grove (UMH)

OPENING PRAYERS

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Cynthia Cross

CHILDREN’S SONG: My God is so Big
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
there’s nothing my God cannot do. (clap, clap)
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
there’s nothing my God cannot do. (clap, clap)
The mountains are his,
the valleys are his,
the stars are His handiwork too.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
there’s nothing my God cannot do. (clap, clap)

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
there’s nothing my God cannot do. (clap, clap)
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
there’s nothing my God cannot do. (clap, clap)
He made the trees
he made the seas
he made the elephants too.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
there’s nothing my God cannot do. (clap, clap)

INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS

READINGS: Responsive Psalm 105: 1-6, 16-22 (on screen only)
Genesis 37:1–4, 12–28 Bill Lloyd

Looking Back as told by one of Joseph’s Brothers
~ Gwendoline Cleland
REFLECTION: Broken Relationships

HYMN: Help us Accept Each Other (Tune: Thornbury WOV 389)
Help us accept each other as Christ accepted us;
teach us as sister, brother, each person to embrace.
Be present, Lord, among us, and bring us to believe
we are ourselves accepted and meant to love and live.

Teach us, O Lord, your lessons, as in our daily life
we struggle to be human and search for hope and faith.
Teach us to care for people, for all, not just for some,
to love them as we find them, or as they may be come.

Let your acceptance change us, so that we may be moved
in living situations to do the truth in love;
to practice your acceptance, until we know by heart
the table of forgiveness and laughter’s healing art.

Lord, for today’s encounters with all who are in need,
who hunger for acceptance, for righteousness and bread,
we need new eyes for seeing, new hands for holding on:
renew us with your Spirit; Lord, free us, make us one. © Hope Publishing (UMH)

THE OFFERING: God of endings and new beginnings, we encounter you amidst a broken world. You invite us into these spaces of brokenness – into these cracks, through which the light shines. Thank you for the gift of your presence, even through the difficulty of the unknown and uncomfortable. Now, O God, we bring offerings of money and food, along with gifts of self and service, to be blessed
that we may serve you in Jesus’ name. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: We Are Called to Tell the Story (Tune: Regent Square WOV 84) We are called to tell the story,
passing words of life along,
then to blend our voice with others,
as we sing the sacred song.
Christ be known in all our singing,
filling all with songs of love.

We are called to teach the rhythm
of the dance that never ends,
then to move within the circle,
hand in hand with strangers, friends.
Christ be known in all our dancing,
touching all with hands of love.

We are called to set the table,
blessing bread as Jesus blessed,
then to come with thirst and hunger,
needing care like all the rest,
Christ be known in all our sharing,
feeding all with signs of love.

May the One whose love is broader
than the measure of all space
give us words to sing the story,
move among us in this place.
Christ be known in all our living,
filling all with gifts of love. © Ruth Duck (CH4)

Music Through the Ages Pt 1

A hymn is the praise of God with song; a song is the exultation of the mind dwelling on eternal things, bursting forth in the voice.
(Thomas Aquinas 13th Century)

WELCOME AND NOTICES ~ Session Report

CALL TO WORSHIP:
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
Serve the Lord with gladness;
come before his presence with thanksgiving.
Know ye that the Lord, he is God;
it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
and into his courts with praise;
be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
For the Lord is good;
his mercy is everlasting;
and his truth endureth to all generations. (Based on Ps 100)

HYMN: All Creatures of Our God and King
All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voice and with us sing
alleluia, alleluia;
O burning sun with golden beam,
and silver moon with softer gleam,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Dear mother earth, who day by day
unfolds God’s blessings on our way,
alleluia, alleluia;
All flowers and fruits that in you grow,
let them his glory also show:
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Let all things their Creator bless,
and worship God in humbleness,
alleluia, alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three in One:
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
(Paraphrase of The Canticle of the Sun by Francis of Assisi, 1225)

OPENING PRAYERS

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

COMMENTARY~ From earliest times…

RESPONSIVE READING: Canticle of the Holy Trinity led by Lyn Steele
We praise you, O God.
We acclaim you as Lord;
All creation worships you, Father everlasting.
To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,
cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise;
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of the apostles praise you.
The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.
The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.
Throughout the world the holy church acclaims you:
Father, of majesty unbounded,
Your glorious, true and only Son,
and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the King of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.
When you became incarnate to set us free
you humbly accepted the Virgin’s womb.
You overcame the sting of death,
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory.
We believe that you will come to be our judge.
Come then, Lord, and help your people,
and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. (4th / 5th Century)

COMMENTARY ~ To the monastries and Gregorian Chant…
Music ~ a Gregorian Chant

COMMENTARY ~ And then came The Reformation…

HYMN: A Mighty Fortress is Our God
A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our faithful helper in all need,
no matter what may happen.
The old evil foe
now means deadly woe;
deep guile and great might
are his dread arms in fight;
on earth he has no equal.

With our own might is nothing done;
we’d soon be lost, rejected.
But for us fights the very one
whom God himself elected.
And who may this be? may be?
Christ Jesus is he.
He is our great Lord,
there is no other God;
and he has won the battle. (Martin Luther, Words and Music, 1529)

INTRODUCTION to The Call

Come My Way, My Truth, My Life (spoken) Deborah Fitchett
Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:
such a way as gives us breath;
such a truth as ends all strife,
such a life as conquers death.

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:
such a light as shows a feast;
such a feast as mends in length,
such a strength as makes a guest.

Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
such a joy as none can move;
such a love as none can part,
such a heart as joys in love. (George Herbert, 1633)

OFFERING: Ye Gates Lift up Your Heads sung as offering brought forward.

HYMN: Ye Gates Lift Up Your Heads
Ye gates, lift up your heads on high;
ye doors that last for aye,
be lifted up, that so the King
of glory enter may.
But who of glory is the King?
The mighty Lord is this;
ev’n that same Lord that great in might
and strong in battle is. (Repeat the last two lines)

Ye gates, lift up your heads; ye doors,
doors that do last for aye,
be lifted up, that so the King
of glory enter may.
But who is he that is the King,
the King of glory? who is this?
The Lord of hosts, and none but he,
the King of glory is. (Repeat the last two lines)
Alleluia! alleluia!
alleluia! alleluia! alleluia!
Amen, amen, amen. (Scottish Psalter 1650)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

COMMENTARY ~ The father of English hymn writing…

HYMN: Jesus Shall Reign
Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
does its successive journeys run;
his kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
till moons shall wax and wane no more.

People and realms of every tongue
declare his love in sweetest song;
and infant voices shall proclaim
their early blessings on his name.

Blessings abound where Jesus reigns:
the prisoners leap to lose their chains,
the weary find eternal rest,
and all who suffer want are blest.

Let every creature rise and bring
the highest honours to our King;
angels descend with songs again,
and earth repeat the loud Amen. (Isaac Watts 1719)

COMMENTARY ~ The Wesleys…

HYMN: O For a Thousand Tongues
O for a thousand tongues, to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of our God and King,
the triumphs of his grace!

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
that bids our sorrows cease;
‘tis music in the sinner’s ears,
‘tis life, and health, and peace.

He speaks, and, listening to his voice,
new life the dead receive,
the mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
the humble poor believe.

My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread through all the earth abroad
the honours of your name. (Charles Wesley 1739)

THE BLESSING

THE DOXOLOGY: Old 100th ~ unaccompanied
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise Him, all creatures here below;
praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. (Thomas Ken 1674)
