CALL TO WORSHIP (Matthew 11.28-33 ~ The Message) From the back

HYMN: Sing Your Praise to God Eternal(Tune: Hyfrydol WOV148 ii )
Sing your praise to God eternal, sing your praise to God the Son,
sing your praise to God the Spirit, living and forever One.
God has made us, God has blessed us, God has called us to be true.
God rules over all creation, daily making all things new.

Join the praise of every creature, sing with singing birds at dawn;
when the stars shine forth at nightfall, hear their heavenly antiphon.
Praise God for the light of summer, autumn glories, winter snows,
for the coming of the springtime and the life of all that grows.

Praise God on our days of gladness for the summons to rejoice;
praise God in our times of sadness for the calm, consoling voice.
God our Maker, strong and loving, Christ our Saviour, Leader, Lord,
living God, Creator Spirit, be your holy name adored!

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

WELCOME AND NOTICES

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

CHILDREN’S SONG: Jesus Loves Me
Jesus loves me, this I know,
and the Bible tells me so;
little ones to him belong,
in his love we shall be strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me,
yes, Jesus loves me,
yes, Jesus loves me,
the Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me, this I know,
as he loved so long ago,
taking children on his knee,
saying, ‘Let them come to me.’

Jesus loves me this I know
though my hair is white as snow
though my sight is growing dim
still he bids me trust in him.

Though my steps are oh so slow
with my hand in his I’ll go
on through life come what may
He’ll be there to lead the way.

Jesus loves me still today,
walking with me on my way,
wanting as a friend to give
light and love to all who live. (author unknown)

SERMON

A TIME OF QUIET

THE OFFERING
Generous and giving God, we give thanks for the many blessings and answered prayers we have received, and we respond with humble gratitude. As we reach out beyond ourselves, may what we have to share be blessings and answered prayer for someone else.
In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

INVITATION TO COMMUNION & THE PEACE

COMMUNION HYMN (Tune: )
O changeless Christ, for ever new,
who walked our earthly ways,
still draw our hearts as once you drew
the hearts of other days.

As once you spoke by plain and hill
or taught by shore and sea,
so be today our teacher still,
O Christ of Galilee.

As wind and storm their master heard
and his command fulfilled,
may troubled hearts receive your word,
the tempest-tossed be stilled.

And as of old to all who prayed
your healing hand was shown,
so be your touch upon us laid,
unseen but not unknown.

In broken bread, in wine outpoured,
your new and living way
proclaim to us, O risen Lord, O Christ of this our day. © Hope Publishing (VU)

A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
May the Spirit of Christ be with you,
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift our hearts to God.
Let us give thanks to God who is Wisdom and Love.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
God of light… join our voices in praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord. God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the One who comes in the name of our God.
Hosanna in the highest….

COMMUNION
Communion this morning will be served Anglican style,
from two stations.
You are invited to come in a continuous line
to receive the bread and wine.
Starting with the two main blocks, please come via the side aisles
returning to your seat via the centre aisle. Then the outer sections.
Please don’t feel rushed. Take the time you need.
We will come to people who need to be served where they are.

PRAYER FOLLOWING COMMUNION
Life-giving God,
we give you thanks for the gift of our Saviour’s presence
in the simplicity and splendour of this holy meal.
Unite us with all who are fed by the life of Christ
that we may faithfully proclaim the Good News of your love
and that your church may be a rainbow of hope
in an uncertain world; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen

HYMN: Sent Forth by God’s Blessing
Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,
the people of God from this dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended, O now be extended
the fruits of this service in all who believe.
The seed of Christ’s teaching, receptive souls reaching,
shall blossom in action for God and for all.
God’s grace did invite us, God’s love shall unite us
to work for the kingdom and answer its call.

With praise and thanksgiving to God ever living,
the tasks of our everyday life we will face.
Our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,
embracing God’s children of each tribe and race.
With your feast you feed us, with your light now lead us;
unite us one in this life that we share.
Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving
give honour to Christ and the name that we bear.

A WINTER POEM (Pauline Cartwright) From the Back

HYMN: God Whose Love is Everywhere
God whose love is everywhere
made our earth and all things fair,
ever keeps them in his care;
praise the God of love!
He who hung the stars in space
holds the spinning world in place;
praise the God of love!

Come with thankfulness to sing
of the gifts the seasons bring,
summer, winter, autumn, spring;
praise the God of love!
He who gave us breath and birth
gives us all the fruitful earth;
praise the God of love!

See the sign of love appear,
flame of glory, bright and clear,
light for all the world is here;
praise the God of love!
Gloom and darkness, get you gone!
Christ the Light of life has shone;
praise the God of love! © Hope Publishing (HFTC)

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

WELCOME AND NOTICES

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Alice Shanks

CHILDREN’S SONG: Praise the Lord our God (Tune: Kum Ba Yah)
Praise the Lord our God, praise the Lord;
Praise him from the heights, praise the Lord;
Praise him, angel throngs, praise the lord –
Praise God, all you folk!

Praise him, sun and moon, all the stars;
Praise him, sky and clouds, wind and rain;
Let them praise his name, works of God –
All creation, praise the Lord!

Praise him, ice and snow, mountain steep;
Praise him, fruitful trees, kauri tall;
Sheep and cattle herds, birds that fly-
All creatures, praise the Lord! (Based on Ps 148 Richard Bewes)

READINGS: Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 – For Everything a Season Beverley &
John 1: 1-9 – God’s light shines in the darkness Bruce Hudson

HYMN: Throughout this Winter Season (Tune: Tyrolese WOV 176)
Throughout this winter season,
in nature’s mid-year womb,
Christ grant you life and laughter
to lighten frosty gloom –
to lift our flagging spirits
beyond these short-lived days
to Advent and each coming
which fills our lives with praise.

You come as puddles crackle
beneath the children’s feet:
you come in leafless branches
outlined against the sleet:
you come when lives diminish
as smog envelopes all:
you come as snow which blankets
earth’s grime beneath its fall.

You come as fire and candle
and all that warms the heart:
you come in party feasting,
in music, dance and art:
you come in ancient stories
of years that are no more:
you come as liberation
and power for all the poor. © Bill Wallace (STC)

REFLECTION

A TIME OF QUIET

HYMN: Our Life Has its Seasons
Our life has its seasons, and God has the reasons
why spring follows winter, and new leaves grow,
for there’s a connection with our resurrection
that flowers will bud after frost and snow,
so there’s never a time to stop believing
there’s never a time for hope to die,
there’s never a time to stop loving,
these three things go on.

There’s a time to be planting,
a time to be plucking,
a time to be laughing,
a time to weep,
a time to be building,
a time to be breaking,
a time to be waking,
a time to sleep,
but there’s never a time…

There’s a time to be hurting
a time to be healing,
a time to be saving,
a time to spend,
a time to be grieving,
a time to be dancing,
a time for beginning,
a time to end,
but there’s never a time… © Shirley Murray (AA)

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

THE OFFERING
God we bring this offering of money and goods, and lay them alongside the offering of ourselves: our lives and our gifts and talents. Bless them and us, as together we serve you in this place, and in the communities we are part of, in the name of Jesus Christ. AMEN.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: In the Bulb There is a Flower
In the bulb there is a flower,
in the seed, an apple tree;
In cocoons, a hidden promise:
butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter
there’s a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.

There’s a song in every silence,
seeking word and melody,
there’s a dawn in every darkness,
bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future
what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.

In our end is our beginning,
in our time, infinity;
In our doubt there is believing;
in our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection;
at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season,
Something God alone can see. © Natalie Sleeth (VU)

CALL TO WORSHIP:
O come, let us worship and bow down,
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker!

For he is our God
and we the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.

HYMN: O Laughing Light (Tune: Christe Sanctorum WOV2)
O laughing Light, O first-born of creation,
Radiance of glory, light from light begotten,
God self-revealing, holy, bright and blessed:
You shine upon us.

Day’s light is fleeting, yours is light eternal;
We look to you, our light within the shadow.
We sing to you, Creator, Christ, and Spirit.
You shine before us.

Light of the world, O Jesus Christ, we bless you.
Giver of life and Child of God, we praise you.
Hear as the universe proclaims your glory!
You shine among us. © Sylvia G. Dunstan (CH4)

PRAYERS OF ADORATION, CONFESSION & SUPPLICATION

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Gillian Cree
O
CHILDREN’S SONG: Hello Everybody!
Hello everybody! How do you do? How do you do? How do you do?
Hello everybody! How do you do? God loves you today.

If your name is — clap now,
If your name is — clap now.
If your name is — clap now,
If your name is — clap now.
Hello everybody!…
If you have red on, clap now,
If you have blue on, clap now.
If you have green on, clap now,
If you have yellow on, clap now.
Hello everybody!…

If you like spaghetti, clap now,
If you like swimming, clap now.
If you like rainbows, clap now,
If you like biking, clap now.
Hello everybody!…

READINGS FROM SCRIPTURE: Ken & Peggy Cree
Genesis 1: 1-4; 26-27

Psalm 8 (Responsive)
O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God,

And crowned them with glory and honour. You have given them dominion over the works of your hands
You have put all things under their feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Sovereign,
How majestic is your name in all the earth!

2 Corinthians 13: 11-13

Matthew 28: 16-20

SERMON: Rev. Dr John McKean

HYMN: O Thou who Camest from Above (Tune: Wilton WOV486i)
O thou who camest from above
The pure celestial fire to impart,
Kindle a flame of sacred love
On the mean altar of my heart.

There let if for thy glory burn
With inextinguishable blaze
And trembling to its source return,
In humble prayer and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire
To work, and speak, and think for thee;
Still let me guard the holy fire,
And still stir up thy gift in me,

Ready for all thy perfect will,
My acts of faith and love repeat,
Till death thy endless mercies seal,
And make the sacrifice complete.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

THE PEACE

THE OFFERING:
Father, Son and Spirit Holy
We give you thanks and praise
and dedicate to you
our thoughts, our words
our gifts, our deeds.
The working of our hands
the thinking of our minds
the loving of our hearts.

DEDICATION OF OFFERING & THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: All Praise to our Redeeming Lord (Tune: Lucius WOV367ii)
All praise to our redeeming Lord,
Who joins us by his grace,
And bids us, each to each restored,
Together seek his face.

He bids us build each other up;
And, gathered into one,
To our high calling’s glorious hope
We hand in hand go on.

The gift which he on one bestows,
We all delight to prove;
The grace through every vessel flows,
In purest streams of love.

Even now we think and speak the same,
And cordially agree;
Concentred all, through Jesus’ name,
In perfect harmony.

We all partake the joy of one,
The common peace we feel,
A peace to sensual minds unknown,
A joy unspeakable.

And if our fellowship below
In Jesus be so sweet,
What heights of rapture shall we know
When round his throne we meet.

BLESSING & THREE-FOLD AMEN (sung)
